The Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH) Scholars is a longitudinal program for medical students who are interested in practicing cost-effective, high-quality primary care as part of a larger vision of improving the health of populations. In addition to this unique blending of primary care and public health concepts, the program helps students build skills in research, writing, and leadership.
The PCPH Scholars Program is led by Anthony Viera, MD, MPH, and Lisa Slatt, MEd, with the help of a multidisciplinary committee consisting of faculty members from the School of Medicine and the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
This is a voluntary program which starts in first year. Students will receive elective credit for successfully completing the program’s components. Obtaining a masters in public health [MPH] is encouraged. Added benefits of the program include early assurance into the Health Care and Prevention MPH program, provided good standing is maintained in the School of Medicine and other application requirements are met, and travel funds to attend a conference.
