Research

UNC’s Trauma Program supports an active Research Center with broad ranging investigative programs involving both clinical and basic scientific research. The Department of Surgery is funded by the National Institutes of Health/GMS via the T32 mechanism to provide structured and mentored research experiences through the Trauma Research Fellowship Program. The Trauma Center at UNC enjoys productive collaborative relationships with other campus-based Centers of Excellence. The UNC Highway Safety Research Center and the Injury Prevention Center are excellent resources and serve to further augment the strength of UNC’s program.

The Division of Trauma and Critical Care at the University of North Carolina is dedicated to developing and implementing research programs which actively investigate the pathophysiology of Traumatic Disease. In addition to our clinical Critical Care Fellowship we maintain an NIH funded T32 Trauma Research Fellowship to enable residents and post doctorates from around the country to participate in the rich research environment that UNC sustains.

The Division is actively involved in clinical trials and supports active bench research in the field. The program continues to enjoy collaborative relationships with the school of public health as well as the injury Prevention Center and the National Highway Traffic Safety Research.

The Division enjoys collaborative relationships with other departments within the University including the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Immunology, the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, and the Cystic Fibrosis and Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center. Many of the laboratories are funded through both intramural and extramural mechanisms; including the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Rich supports a Trauma and Critical Care basic science laboratory under the direction of Christelle Douilet, PhD. This laboratory focuses on mechanisms of mechanotransduction. This laboratory along with the others provides a rich environment and infrastructure for collaborative research and offers a unique experience for residents, post doctorates, and fellows who are interested in the basic sciences.
