Welcome

The overarching goals of the Carroll lab are to understand the mechanisms which the intestinal microbiota influence Gastrointestinal physiology, nutrition, behavior, weight regulation, and disease.  We investigate the impact of enteric microbial communities on these factors using molecular profiling techniques that include high–through-put sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in gnotobiotic animals or mice with defined microbial communities. Our current research focuses on the functional impact intestinal microbiotas from Anorexia Nervosa patients have on weight regulation and adiposity (the accumulation and storage of fat). Additionally, we investigate the influence of intestinal microbiota on gut physiology and inflammation in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD]. Ultimately our investigations will provide direction on how best to test adjunct interventions in Anorexia Nervosa and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases to enhance current approaches to therapy.
