About the CIDD
The Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) is a comprehensive center providing multidisciplinary clinical services, conducting basic to applied research, conducting clinical and research training and engaging in advocacy, all with the goal of improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families throughout North Carolina and across the country.

The CIDD is one of a small number of comprehensive University centers for developmental disabilities in the U.S. that houses and seeks to integrate goals and resources from all three programs of national significance in intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Our Mission
The mission of the CIDD is to serve as a leader in clinical care, training, and research in the field of developmental disabilities. To achieve this, the CIDD is structured as a comprehensive interdisciplinary center, which:
- Offers state-of-the-art, culturally sensitive clinical services for individuals with developmental disabilities across the age span
- Provides specialized training opportunities in clinical care and research
- Serves as a technical assistance resource to community-based programs and providers
- Advances research ranging from basic to applied science, including research that represents the needs and experiences of diverse populations
- Engages in policy guidance and advocacy efforts
- Disseminates evidence-based information related to neurodevelopmental conditions
Through this work, the CIDD aims to positively impact the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Alongside the UNC School of Medicine, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for all individuals and families we serve, as well as for our trainees, faculty, staff, and community partners.
