FAQs

Is the program accredited?

Yes, the UNC Hospitals Clinical Informatics Fellowship was accredited by the ACGME in April 2019 with a commendation for no citations. Our inaugural class of fellows started July 1, 2020.

How many fellows do you accept each year?

We are accredited to have up to 2 fellows per class.

Does this program accept international trainees?

Applicants must be eligible to practice medicine within the United States. Applicants must be United States citizens or have a United States permanent resident status. The program does not sponsor visas at this time.

Will I be allowed to moonlight?

Moonlighting is permitted with approval from the UNC Graduate Medical Education office and with permission from the Program Director. Our focus is to ensure exceptional training in clinical informatics and moonlighting should not interfere with educational activities.

Will I be able to practice in my specialty and provide patient care?

CI fellows are expected to practice clinically as an attending physician in their primary clinical specialty at UNC for 20% of their time during fellowship training. The setting and clinical duties are flexible and will be arranged with the primary specialty department. Each fellow will have a clinical appointment as Clinical Instructor in the UNC School of Medicine.

Are there informatics leadership roles for CI fellows?

CI fellows will serve as Assistant Lead Informatics Physicians for UNC Health’s award-winning Information Services Division, which is a shared IT service across UNC’s health system comprised of 11 hospitals and over 800+ clinics across the state of North Carolina.

Where can I learn about salary and benefits?

Salary and benefits are directly sponsored through University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.
