About
Dr. Alex McDonald, MD, CASQM, FAAFP, is a Family Medicine and Sports Medicine specialist, educator, and thought leader in the fields of Lifestyle Medicine, Social Media, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound. Dr. McDonald holds a BA from Connecticut College as well as his medical degree from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at Duke University, and Family Medicine residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Southern California Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, CA.
Dr. McDonald is currently a member of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) in Fontana, CA, where he is Program Director of the family medicine residency and core faculty of the sports medicine fellowship. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine and serves or has served on the board of the San Bernardino County Medical Society, the executive committee of the California Academy of Family Physicians, the SCPMG Government Relations Committee, as well as the Young Physician trustee of the California Medical Association. Dr. McDonald also served on several subcommittees of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as a member of the AAFP Congress of Delegates. Furthermore, he was elected to the Claremont Unified School District Board of Education, where he focuses his efforts on education as the foundation to good health.
Since 2018, he regularly teaches POCUS fundamentals and advanced techniques to residents, medical students, and practicing clinicians, emphasizing practical, evidence‑based integration into everyday clinical decision‑making. He has contributed to the growing POCUS literature through peer‑reviewed publications, curriculum development, and collaborative research focused on improving diagnostic accuracy and bedside efficiency in family medicine. Known for his clear teaching style, hands‑on mentorship, and commitment to patient-centered care, he continues to champion POCUS as an essential skill for modern primary care practice.
