Dr. Harrop was part of a team led by Drs. Brenna Maddox (Psychiatry, UNC TEACCH) and Dara Chan (Health Sciences) recently awarded an Applied Research Grant from the Organization for Autism Research. The study, Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Autistic Adults: The Role of Community and Social Connections, will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), online social diaries, and self-report of social connections to examine how social and community integration relates to suicidal thoughts and behaviors in autistic adults. We anticipate that this project will expand the body of knowledge related to suicide prevention and intervention by improving our understanding of suicide risk in autism and informing how future work can utilize community connections as protective factors. The study will begin recruitment in late 2022.
