Admissions Requirements

We’re looking for curious, service-driven future physicians who are ready for the rigor of medical school. Strong academics, including the MCAT and key BCPM coursework, plus thoughtful recommendations, help show you’re prepared to join our community of Tar Heel Doctors.

Admissions Checklist

Our step-by-step process is designed to be clear and fair — from preparing academically and gathering recommendation letters, to submitting your AMCAS and supplemental applications, interviewing if invited, and hearing back on decisions by early spring.

Our Ideal Candidate

A Tar Heel Doctor is something special. While we evaluate each of our applicants based on certain selection criteria, we are also looking for that indelible extra element that tells us that you connect with our mission. Smart is easy. Being a great doctor goes far beyond that.

North Carolina Residency

Wondering about in-state tuition eligibility? The Residency Determination Service (RDS) is the centralized system in North Carolina for determining residency for students.

Veteran Recruitment

We value the service and skills veterans bring to medicine. UNC offers dedicated support and resources — including the Military Medicine Interest Group and specialized pathways like MED and Medic to PA — to help former service members navigate the application process and thrive here.

Timeline For Current Applicants

Stay on track and know what to expect: interview invitations and status updates go out by December, and final decisions — including acceptances — are released through early April in your applicant portal.

Immunization Requirements

Keeping our community healthy starts before day one. You’ll need to complete and document state and School of Medicine immunization requirements on time to secure your place and be ready for clinical training.

Accessibility

We’re committed to ensuring every qualified student can thrive at UNC SOM. Applicants and admitted students can confidentially request accommodations and connect early with Accessibility Resources & Service for the support they need to succeed.
