Dent College

The Dent Advisory College is named in honor of Dr. Georgette Dent, who served as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the UNC School of Medicine from 1998 to 2022. Throughout her career, Dr. Dent has been dedicated to the professional development of medical students, striving to help them reach their full potential and harness their unique talents to positively impact their future patients and the healthcare field. Her commitment to student support and development led her to serve on several national committees, including the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), the AAMC Careers in Medicine (CiM) Advisory Committee, the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Committee for Promoting Diversity. During her tenure as Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Dent played a crucial role in expanding and enhancing the UNC School of Medicine’s branch campuses, dual degree programs, international initiatives, Advisory College program, and the SOM/CAPS embedded counselor program. Her remarkable contributions have earned her numerous awards, including the John Foust Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professorship, the AAMC Southern Group on Student Affairs Bob Sabalis Award, the UNC SOM Academy of Educator’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Medical Education, and the Medical Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award. Since June 2022, Dr. Dent has continued her passion for teaching as a faculty member in the UNC Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, where she enjoys mentoring pathology trainees. She also remains engaged with the School of Medicine as a Medical Education & Student Professional Development Coach, guiding students through their medical education journey. Dr. Georgette Dent truly embodies the values we aspire to instill in our students: to follow their passions and use their medical training to make the world a better place.
