Shannon Herndon: Shannon is a third year medical student at the UNC School of Medicine. She
previously attended Johns Hopkins University for her undergraduate education where she
received a BS in Neuroscience with a second major in Spanish. She has spent extended
periods of time in Argentina, during which she assisted in the translation of a research paper
about Posterior Cortical Atrophy and she conducted research at the Austral Institute, a
community mental health clinic in the province of Neuquén. Her research interests focus on
mental health and improving access to health care in the Latino Community, both locally and

Lauren Ellis:

Lauren is a second year medical student at the UNC School of Medicine. Her prior research experiences have been in translational cancer research and pediatric clinical trials. While completing her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Duke University, she organized and worked at mobile clinics in rural Honduras and Nicaragua. Her research focuses include quality improvement and care of refugee and immigrant populations, with a particular interest in serving the Spanish-speaking community. She currently volunteers with the free Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC) as a Spanish translator and coordinator for the women’s clinic.
