Research Interests

As a transfusion medicine physician, he treats patients across the lifespan using therapeutic apheresis and transfusion therapies at UNC. He is actively engaged in collaborative and multi-center clinical and translational studies aiming to improve the lives of his patients.

Specialty Areas

Dr. Matthew Karafin is a Transfusion Medicine Pathologist who is part of the Pathology faculty in the Department of Pathology at the UNC School of Medicine as an Associate Professor and as the Director of the Therapeutic Apheresis program.  As a provider of red cell exchanges and chronic transfusion therapy for both pediatric and adult patients with sickle cell disease at UNC, he is actively engaged in clinical and translational research studies aiming to improve the quality and efficacy of these treatments.
