The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is pleased to welcome Dr. Maria Aleman to the faculty. Dr. Aleman joins the department from the UNC Department of Pharmacology, where she served as an Assistant Professor and developed a nationally recognized research program.
A UNC alumna, Dr. Aleman earned her PhD in Pathology and completed postdoctoral training at UNC’s Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology. Her research focuses on blood coagulation, erythropoiesis, and iron-sensitive RNA regulation, with impactful contributions to the understanding of thrombosis and RNA-binding protein biology. In addition to her research achievements, Dr. Aleman is a dedicated educator and mentor and has held leadership roles supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the School of Medicine.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Aleman to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and look forward to her contributions to our department’s research, teaching, and service missions.
