What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a residency program and institution that provided care to a diverse patient population, with an emphasis on caring for those most in need. It was difficult to find programs that had excellent surgical training and academic opportunities, while still serving as the safety-net hospital for a region. I think UNC falls right in that sweet spot. In addition, I prioritized finding a program where there were positive relationships between co-residents and between residents and attendings. Now as a PGY-3, I have not only developed amazing friendships with my co-residents but have also gained many incredible faculty mentors.
Favorite memory of the intern year?
All the coffee runs with my co-residents (which basically happened every day…)
Favorite place to go in NC?
Tobacco Road Golf Club
Favorite case to scrub into?
Gastric or duodenal ulcer perforation
Hobbies
Golfing, boating, watching the Buffalo Bills (THIS is our year), road biking (slowly and infrequently), traveling to visit friends
