Areas of Interest

Inflammation and oxidative and nitrosative stress in critical illness, including burns, severe cardiopulmonary dysfunction (particularly the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation [ECMO]), and trauma; translational research between small and large animal models and prospective clinical trials.

About

The Surgical Critical Care and Trauma Research Program focuses on three critically ill patient populations: burned patients, ECMO and mechanically ventilated patients, and trauma patients. The research is translational; projects typically begin with an analysis of retrospective data, transition to biospecimen analysis from subject samples, the testing of hypotheses in small (murine, rattine) and large (ovine, porcine) animal models, and the design and implementation of clinical trials. Dr. Sousse’s goals are to develop and translate therapies from bench to bedside, including the use of retrospective clinical data in designing experiments and the creation of biospecimen and long-term outcome repositories. Current projects include patient clustering and prediction of clinical outcomes in critical illness based on admission biomarkers, optimization of ventilator and circuit settings in patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction, use of extracorporeal blood purification devices for immunomodulation, testing wound healing powder dressings, and verticalization and exercise programs in both ECMO and trauma populations.
