UNC’s Wound Healing and Podiatry is a multidiscipline center established to bring several specialties together to provide coordinated, efficient, and effective care to patients with lower extremity wounds. The center’s staff includes vascular and endovascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, diabetic care, podiatry, physical and occupational therapy, and rehabilitation.

Some of the more common conditions treated include diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, ischemic ulcers and gangrene, and other persistent wounds that require special care.

The center is currently enrolling patients in a multitude of clinical trials involving emerging wound-healing technologies such as stem cells, growth factors, and skin substitutes.

Patients are generally seen on an outpatient basis, and treatment plans often involve close coordination with home health agencies and patient families. In those patients in whom an amputation becomes indicated, extensive rehabilitation services are incorporated to maximize patients’ mobility and recovery.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Currently, two monoplace chambers are available for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for such conditions as diabetic foot ulcers, and radiosteonecrosis.

New patient referrals can be made by contacting the Referral Center at 984-974-2800.
