Dr. Katherine Chan completed medical school at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, followed by Urology residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She went on to complete a three-year pediatric urology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in 2013. As part of the fellowship, she completed the Harvard-wide Pediatric Health Services Fellowship, earning a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. Before joining the Department of Urology at UNC in 2021, Dr. Chan was an Assistant Professor of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine for over 7 years where she was co-director of the pediatric kidney stone clinic at Riley Hospital for Children. While at IU, she expanded access to care for underserved rural and urban communities in the state of Indiana and maintained a clinical and surgical practice for those patients throughout her tenure.
Dr. Chan is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and is board certified in general and pediatric urology. She specializes in pediatric urology and is an expert in the surgical treatment of hypospadias, undescended testes, and kidney stones. Dr. Chan brings her expertise in stone management as Director of the Pediatric Kidney Stone Clinic at UNC.
As a surgeon-scientist, Dr. Chan has been principal investigator for multiple NIH-funded research projects over the past 4 years. Her latest research focus is developing a decision-making tool for parents whose children have hypospadias. Her team is also creating a patient-centered outcomes tool to study the long-term effects in adolescents and young adults after hypospadias repair as children. Dr. Chan is a member of the Hypospadias Task Force of the Societies of Pediatric Urology. She also serves as a reviewer for multiple journals including the Journal of Pediatric Urology, Journal of Urology, Urology and JAMA Pediatrics.

Chan Awarded UNC Center for Health Innovation 2024 Innovation Pilot Award
Dr. Katherine Chan, MD, MPH has been announced as a recipient of a 2024 Innovation Pilot Awards. Dr. Chan’s project, “A pilot feasibility study of a small group professional coaching intervention to decrease burnout and improve well-being among UNC Health physicians,” was selected alongside 4 other projects by the UNC Center for Health Innovation.
