Dr. Angela Smith, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, Professor of Urology and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and distinguished alumna of the UNC School of Medicine, has been honored with the UNC Medical Alumni Affairs Early Career Achievement Award for 2023. This award recognizes graduates who have made significant contributions to their field of medicine through their scientific, academic, or humanitarian endeavors within the first 15 years of their careers. Dr. Smith is the inaugural recipient of this award, making the recognition even more special.

A Quadruple Tar Heel

Dr. Angela Smith is a “Quadruple Tar Heel,” earning her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Medicine degrees all from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Since graduating from the UNC School of Medicine in 2007,  she has embarked on a remarkable career that has garnered numerous accolades and recognition both at UNC and in the larger medical community.

Dr. Smith has quickly become a well-renowned academic urologist, bringing a wealth of experience to UNC and numerous other institutions, and as well as the  professional organizations in which she has leadership roles.

In addition to her appointment as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development at the UNC School of Medicine, Dr. Smith has served as the Director of the Urologic Oncology Program and Director of the UNC Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Clinic. Her research focuses on improving the quality of care and outcomes for patients with genitourinary cancers, and she has authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Dr. Smith has also served in various leadership roles within the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology. Her accomplishments have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Gold Cystoscope Award from the American Urological Association, the Presidential Citation Award from the Society of Urologic Oncology, and numerous UNC awards including the Yang Family Biomedical Scholar, the Hettleman Prize, and the School of Medicine’s Teaching Excellence Award.

Throughout her career, Dr. Smith has also been dedicated to mentoring and empowering the next generation of medical professionals. Her passion for education and leadership development, combined with her experience in the field of urology recently earned her the 2023 Christina Manthos Mentoring Award from the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU).
