It is with great pleasure that the UNC Urology Department announces the promotion of Dr. Matthew Coward to the position of Associate Professor with Tenure.

Within the UNC School of Medicine, the promotion of a faculty member on the tenure track to Associate Professor with Tenure requires unequivocal evidence of excellence in educational scholarship, research, or clinical scholarship.

Clinical Practice:

Faculty members such as Dr. Coward who provide direct patient care are expected to do so in an exemplary manner, employing current, state-of-the-art methods that are respected by both patients and peers within the larger professional community.

Dr. Coward’s clinical practice offers comprehensive Men’s Reproductive and Sexual Health services including evaluation and treatment of male infertility and men’s health. Dr. Coward works within UNC Fertility and provides services including micro-TESE, vasectomies, and microsurgical vasectomy reversals.

Teaching:

UNC School of Medicine faculty are expected to make substantial contributions to the School’s and Department’s teaching missions through sustained excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Currently, Dr. Coward serves as the Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC Fertility as well as our Andrology Fellowship Program Director; both overlapping heavily with our education programs.

“Dr. Coward is an unbelievable surgeon, mentor, and resident advocate – we are extremely fortunate to have him on faculty.”

Benjamin J. McCormick, MD – PGY 5

“Dr. Coward is a resident advocate in the strongest sense. Having been a resident of this program, he knows the ins and outs of what UNC urology residency is like, and uses his perspective and experience to support us through and through, both professionally and outside of work. He always has our back, makes sure we know he is there for us and makes himself available to us, whatever we need. Dr. Coward is a pleasure to work with, but what makes him so well liked is his constant dedication to teaching and mentorship.”

Pauline Filippou, MD – PGY 5

“Dr. Coward has been a true mentor throughout residency. I’ve learned a ton from him about research, patient care, and what it takes to build a successful men’s health practice.”

Solomon Hayon, MD – PGY 3

Research:

Dr. Coward’s research interests include clinical trials in reproductive medicine, male infertility, vasectomy and vasectomy reversal, penile prostheses, and urologic imaging.
