The UNC Urology Residency Program is excited to announce that it has received approval for a permanent resident complement increase, expanding the program to four residents per year this application cycle. As part of this expansion, UNC Urology will participate in the Urology Secondary Match to recruit a fourth PGY-1 resident for the 2026–2027 academic year.
To support applicants navigating the Secondary Urology Match process, the Society of Academic Urologists (SAU) will host an Unmatched Applicant Webinar on January 27, 2026. Registration and additional information are available at: https://sauweb.org/meetings/
Reflecting on the significance of this milestone, Kristy M. Borawski, MD, Professor of Urology, Vice Chair of Education, and Urology Residency Program Director, shared:
“This permanent complement increase represents a meaningful investment in the future of urologic care, education, and research at UNC. Expanding our residency allows us to train more outstanding urologists in an environment that prioritizes academic excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. Most importantly, it strengthens our ability to serve the people of North Carolina by preparing the next generation of physicians who will lead and advance urologic care across the state and beyond.”
This marks the first permanent complement increase since the 2011/2012 academic year, underscoring the continued growth of the UNC Urology Residency Program and its long-standing commitment to education, clinical excellence, and service to North Carolinians.
