The UNC Department of Urology is proud to share that Dr. Sherry Ross, Associate Professor and Chief of Pediatric Urology, has been appointed as the Faculty Director of Outreach Initiatives for the UNC School of Medicine’s Dean’s Office. In her new role, Dr. Ross will focus on enhancing collaboration between the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Health, and Novant Health to improve health outcomes across southeastern North Carolina. This partnership represents a powerful academic and community health system initiative dedicated to advancing healthcare access, education, and quality throughout the region.
Dr. Ross has a rich history of leadership and dedicated service to the UNC community. Since joining the Department of Urology in June 2014, she has held multiple impactful roles, including serving as the Division Chief of Pediatric Urology and the Medical Director of the Children’s Specialty Clinic at UNC Hospitals. With a career devoted to improving pediatric urologic care, she has been instrumental in expanding clinical services across the state, ensuring outreach and access for families in underserved areas.
Dr. Ross’s extensive background and expertise in pediatric urology have positioned her as a leader in complex congenital and pediatric urological conditions. She is board-certified in both general and pediatric urology and is recognized for her surgical skill with a focus on complex congenital abnormalities and urinary tract infections. Her goal is to offer cutting-edge surgical options to children at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, while building a team that offers all aspects of minimally invasive care to children.
A North Carolina native, Dr. Ross’s career journey began with her medical education at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, followed by a residency in urology at The George Washington University. She further honed her expertise with a fellowship in pediatric urology at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Before joining UNC, she served as an assistant professor at Duke University, where she directed pediatric urology research and the pediatric stone clinic. Her experience and dedication continue to influence her approach to patient care and leadership within UNC.
In her role as Faculty Director of Outreach Initiatives, Dr. Ross will play a pivotal part in executing the affiliation agreement between UNC and Novant Health, collaborating across research, education, professional development, and clinical care to create lasting health improvements. Her work with outreach clinics and dedication to improving healthcare delivery throughout North Carolina make her an ideal leader for this partnership, which seeks to elevate patient care through collaborative, innovative approaches.
In addition to her clinical and leadership accomplishments, Dr. Ross has consistently demonstrated her commitment to mentorship and education, advising countless residents and medical students throughout her career. She also contributes to scientific advancement through her research on neurogenic bladder infections and pediatric stone disease. Her dedication to her field is reflected in her membership in prestigious organizations such as the American Urological Association, the Society of Pediatric Urology, and the Society for Fetal Urology, as well as her role as a reviewer for major urology journals.
