My clinical expertise is in the treatment of HIV, hepatitis C, and sexually transmitted infections. I have a special interest in the sexual health of men who have sex with men (both HIV positive and uninfected).
I’m very interested in understanding the structural and behavioral factors that influence the spread of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) – especially young MSM of color in the Southeastern US. My research in this area is split between studying HIV testing and prevention behaviors and the scale-up and implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) across North Carolina. I am currently working on a K23 mentored career development award, examining whether HIV self-testing is a viable means of increasing the frequency of testing among young, Black MSM – a group disproportionately impacted by HIV incidence. Previous work in this area has involved sexual network investigations and the application of spatial epidemiological methods to questions about the dynamics of HIV transmission in North Carolina.
In addition to my public health-oriented HIV research, I am interested in the epidemiology and clinical management of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. I’m the director of our ID Clinic’s HCV Treatment Team, helping our providers manage patients with HCV monoinfection and HIV/HCV coinfection. I also help oversee HIV- and HCV-related clinical trials with our UNC Global HIV Prevention and Treatment Clinical Trials Unit.
