Diagnosis and treatment of both common and rare diseases — delivered with personalized attention focused on the needs of each patient.
The UNC Healthcare Allergy & Immunology Specialty Clinic addresses the full range of allergies and diseases of the immune system, primarily focusing on adult patients. The clinic offers cutting edge diagnostic and therapeutic treatment options and often sees patients who have been sent by other physicians because they have severe or difficult to treat conditions, or conditions which prove difficult to diagnose. However, patients do not need a referral to be seen at this clinic.
In addition to treating seasonal, food, bee and medication allergies, as well as managing urticaria (hives), the clinic offers specialized expertise in treating people whose immune systems are not functioning properly, and who may be at increased risk of frequent infections.
Because it is part of a research facility, patients may have an opportunity to enroll in ongoing clinical studies. Clinic physicians keep up with the latest finding findings in the scientific community, regularly attend scientific meetings, and train the doctors who will be tomorrow’s leading medical specialists.
Similarly, clinic nurses regularly pursue continuing education opportunities in order to stay up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of allergy and immune diseases. This helps foster better and more productive dialogue by helping ensure they are well equipped to answer patients’ questions, and provide guidance on topics ranging from how patients should take their medicines, to how to better manage their medical conditions.
“Patient First” – A Team Approach
The clinic prides itself on the fact that all staff are encouraged to take the time to get to know their patients individually, which helps provide a doctor-patient “team” approach to medical care.
As part of the UNC Health System, the Allergy and Immunology Clinic’s doctors routinely interact with their colleagues in other practice areas such as dermatology (skin), pulmonology (lungs), otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), hematology (the study of blood and diseases of the blood), oncology (cancer), gastroenterology (stomach/digestive system), and others. As a result, patients receive integrated care from a team of doctors who coordinate their collective efforts and are able to access shared medical information in real time.
The “patient first” philosophy of the clinic staff yields a uniquely personalized experience and high patient satisfaction. The facility routinely receives recognition as one of the “Top 5” UNC clinics for patient satisfaction. In addition, several of its physicians have been recognized with the Carolina Care Excellence award, for having 100% of patients surveyed indicate that they would recommend their doctor to others.
