Discussing the KCH Burn Unit Instrument Packs

The majority of burn patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital are under the age of 5 and wait for weeks to months with open wounds which could be easily grafted. The shortage of capacity for skin grafting is particularly glaring during dressing changes which despite analgesia are painful and frightening for young children.

With support from Johnson and Johnson, Malawi Surgical Initiative and the NC Jaycee Burn Center is developing a dedicated burn theatre to be located within the burn unit at Kamuzu Central Hospital. This will greatly increase the operating room capacity and throughput of burn victims, which will significantly decrease the pain and suffering for burned children, as well as decrease complications including chronic malnutrition, infection, and contractures.
