Eggs, powdered milk, and porridge during pilot phase of nutrition support for burn patients

With support from Johnson and Johnson, Malawi Surgical Initiative and the NC Jaycee Burn Center is providing nutrition supplementation to burn patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital. Beth Higgins, a nutritionist who works with surgical patients at UNC, traveled to Malawi for two weeks and worked with both the KCH burn staff and the KCH food services to design a nutrition supplementation plan. After multiple consultations and planning, a pilot of boiled egg, powdered milk, and Nutri-Porridge supplementation was successful. Currently the program now supplies additional nutrients for the admitted burn patients, with an emphasis on protein supplementation.
