Division of General and Acute Care Surgery is a state-verified Level I Trauma Center. We receive patients from all over the state of North Carolina who require the highest level of specialized care for adult and pediatric trauma. In addition, UNC Hospitals through the Trauma Program Office operates as the lead agency for the MidCarolina Regional Advisory Committee (RAC), one of eight making up the statewide trauma system. The RAC serves as a method of standardizing trauma care throughout the state and providing support to the hospitals and EMS agencies that belong to it.

The Division of General and Acute Care Surgery is a collaborative enterprise that incorporates the expertise of many different disciplines in order to provide the most comprehensive care possible for adult and pediatric trauma patients. Units involved in the care of trauma patients include Carolina Air Care, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care, Surgical Units, Pediatric Specialty Units, Rehabilitation Units and the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center. In addition, the Trauma Program establishes and maintains all protocols and procedures involved in our trauma process.
