WMS Book Exchange Program
What is the WMS Book Exchange Program?
The WMS Book Exchange Program was created to help third year students save money on textbooks required for core clinical clerkships. Rising MS3s have the chance to join the book exchange program entitling them to access the books they need for five of the core clerkships, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Psychiatry, and Surgery. Family Medicine and Neurology currently provide books for students on their rotations.
What is the enrollment fee?
There is a $55 enrollment fee for the program. This fee is used to purchase books for the program as well as maintain the quality of the current selection. In the future, the enrollment fees will be used for buying new editions and providing multiple options for question and review books.
Why should I join?
Do you like to save money? If you do, you should join! A small fee of $55 is required for enrollment which is used to maintain collection and purchase new books when necessary. For $55, you are getting guaranteed access to these 10 books. At list price, these 10 books would cost you ~$350! Net savings of almost $300! Wow, what an investment!
How do I join?
Enrollment for the 2008-2009 Third Year has already taken place! Second years, look for information on how to join the program in March 2009.

Where and how do I actually check out books?
The circulation desk in HSL has list of everyone in the program and a record of everyone's rotation schedule. All you have to do is ask to check out books at the desk.
Can I highlight or write in the books?
No. You must treat these books the same way you would treat a library book. If you do decide to highlight and write in a book, you must replace the book before the block ends. The library will assess the conditions of the books once they are returned.
What happens if I damage or lose a book?
Damaged or lost books must be replaced before the block ends. If the book is not replaced, you will be charged for the price of the book and borrowing privileges will be suspended. Replacement means providing the library with a NEW copy of the book.
I have suggestions for the program. Who should I send these to?
The booklist has been set for the current year. But as the program continues to grow, we will begin to offer multiple options of review and question books, so send your suggestions to Allison Serra (allison_serra@med.unc.edu) or Mark Clapp (mark_clapp@med.unc.edu).
