Dr. Jeffrey Stringer, Clarke-Pearson Distinguished Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UNC-Chapel Hill and CFAR member, has received the prestigious 2025 Oliver Max Gardner Award—the highest faculty honor in the UNC System—for his global leadership in maternal health and innovation in low-resource settings. Since joining UNC in 2012, Dr. Stringer has led the School of Medicine’s Division of Global Women’s Health and serves as associate director for research at the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. He has secured over $120 million in funding for maternal health research and co-founded the nation’s first global women’s health fellowship program. Dr. Stringer’s latest breakthrough has been a portable, AI-enhanced prenatal ultrasound device. This device provides critical diagnostics in underserved areas worldwide, with support from the Gates Foundation and Helmsley Charitable Trust. This innovation is already improving care across Africa and Asia, with plans for deployment in rural North Carolina. A prolific researcher with nearly 300 publications, Dr. Stringer’s contributions to maternal HIV care and public health in Zambia have impacted millions. His career embodies UNC’s mission of global service, and his work continues to shape the future of maternal and child health at home and abroad.
