The UNC Center for AIDS Research proudly announces that Becky White, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been selected by the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) to receive the 2025 Ada Adimora Citation Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. White’s exceptional leadership in improving HIV care particularly for incarcerated women living with HIV.
The Adaora Adimora Citation Award celebrates the legacy of the late Adaora Adimora, MD, MPH, FIDSA, a pioneering physician-scientist whose career was marked by deep compassion, and public service. The award honors individuals who advance efforts to end the HIV epidemic through public service, or dedicated involvement with HIVMA.
Dr. White serves as the Director of UNC Infectious Diseases and HIV Services within the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections and is a core member of the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. Her research lies at the critical intersection of public health and medicine, with a focus on improving health outcomes for people involved in the criminal legal system.
Dr. White was among the first physicians to identify the connection between release from incarceration and worsening HIV outcomes, including increases in viral load. Currently, Dr. White is designing a post-release intervention aimed at enhancing HIV prevention and care continuity for formerly incarcerated individuals.
