Associate Professor Research SummaryAnne Peery is a digestive disease epidemiologist who has made major contributions to our understanding of diverticular disease. While diverticular disease is common in the United States, it has previously been understudied. In a series of important papers, Dr. Peery has demonstrated that most of what we formerly believed about diverticulosis is incorrect. She has participated in guideline development on diverticulitis for the AGA. She has also been involved in studies on the overuse of surgery for benign colorectal diseases. With support from a K23 award, she is investigating the effectiveness of antibiotics for acute diverticulitis. Relevance of Research to CGIBD Mission: The mission of the CGIBD is to reduce the burden of digestive diseases. Dr. Peery has spearheaded the report on the Burden of Disease most recently published in Gastroenterology in 2019. Her research on diverticular disease and on overutilization of surgery for benign conditions is directly relevant to the CGIBD mission. She has worked with a number of GI epidemiology trainees.
