Research Summary

Dr. Peery is an NIH funded clinical investigator. Her research is focused on understudied but common gastrointestinal diseases that have a significant impact on quality of life and healthcare costs. She is the recipient of an R01 (DK132050) from the NIH to determine the role of obesity in diverticulitis. The study aims to demonstrate that metabolic syndrome and preclinical obesity biomarkers play a role in diverticulitis risk. Dr. Peery has written national guidelines on diverticular disease. She is the organizer of the periodic Burden of Disease papers published by our group. She has used data from a large nationally representative sample to report that surgery is common for non-malignant colorectal polyps many of which could probably be managed nonoperatively.
