Assistant Professor, Microbiology and Immunology

Research Summary

Deepika Sharma is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC. Her research interests involve gut mucosa which is the site where majority of immune cells reside and their activation is tightly controlled to mount an inflammatory response to pathogenic insults but maintain tolerance to innocuous dietary and commensal-derived antigens. While immune cells are central to and at the frontline of an inflammatory response, neuronal cells are active collaborators and modulators of this response. Understanding the identity and function of neuro-immune interactions that modulate immunological processes at mucosal surfaces, and how they can be modulated for favorable outcomes in human diseases are the questions my lab addresses.
