William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory of Developmental Nutrition College of Agriculture and Life Sciences School of Veterinary Medicine North Carolina State University Research SummaryJack Odle has spent his career in agri-medical research which explores diseases that are relevant to animals and humans. He was involved in the planning meetings (2004 & 2007) that led to the development of NIH-USDA funding collaboration. He has worked for over 30 years to develop and utilize the young pig as a model for pediatric nutrition and metabolism. He was commissioned by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to write a landscape review examining the advances in animal science that could lead to improved global maternal and infant nutrition and health. The piglet model developed in his laboratories is considered to be the premier model for pediatric pre-clinical research. His research can dually benefit the human infant as well as piglet growth, development and vitality. His work on piglets can apply broadly to all mammalian neonates. Relevance of Research to CGIBD Mission: Dr. Odle has spent his career in nutritional research in piglets. This research is relevant to human infants. He has collaborated closely with Anthony Blikslager, director of the Large Animal Models Core. He has developed new collaborations with two current pilot/feasibility awardees.
