August 9-11, 2023, UNC Chapel Hill hosted the annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Directors and Staff of Scientific Cores (MAD SSCi), a chapter of the Association for Biomedical Resource Facilities (ABRF) at the UNC Friday Center. Over 60 representatives affiliated with UNC Core facilities attended the conference as attendees or speakers and many attended our pre-meeting workshops, utilizing the opportunity for education in business skills and educational pedagogy for training core customers. We were proud to see so many core advocates and directors from UNC take the stage to discuss a myriad of important topics. It was an honor to share our community’s expertise with the broader regional core community.

A big thank you to all of the corporate and institutional sponsors, many of whom work with our core facilities on campus,–without their support this event could not have been a success.

Special thanks to Dr. Jim Cahoon, Hyde Family Foundation Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Executive Director for Cores in the College of Arts and Sciences, Executive Director of the CHANL Core, UNC site director of the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network, and thrust leader for the DOE Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels, and supporter of core facilities across campus for his keynote talk entitled “Energy Harvesting with Semiconductor Nanostructures from the Visible to the Terahertz”
