The autoimmune disorders clinic is designed specifically for patients with serious autoimmune blistering disorders of the skin and mucosal tissues including all forms of pemphigus and pemphigoid (including mucous membrane pemphigoid), linear IgA bullous dermatosis and dermatitis herpetiformis. These diseases are considered autoimmune diseases, where the immune system incorrectly fights against the body’s own tissues leading to damage of the skin and other tissues.
As these diseases are complex and rare, they require highly specialized treatment by expert physicians in Immunodermatology. The UNC Department of Dermatology is fortunate to have world experts in diagnosing and treating these autoimmune diseases with services available to patients from North Carolina, other states, and abroad. Our diagnostic procedures include evaluations of skin biopsies and highly specific immunological studies including direct and indirect immunofluorescence. Therapy of these diseases may induce clinical remission allowing patients to remain disease-free.
