My name is Genesis Gaddy. This year I have the honor of working as an intern for the ISHTaR program in the Emergency Medicine Department at UNC. I attend a dual enrollment program in my hometown. I would say my favorite subject in school would be ELA or a forensic class I took in middle school. Aside from school, I play soccer at a varsity level. I also enjoy decorating, driving on back roads with music blasting through my car, hanging out with my family and friends, spending time with animals, and shopping. I would describe myself as someone who wants to make the people around me feel safe and comfortable. I enjoy making people feel appreciated and accepted as the individuals they are. When it comes to medical research, the idea of getting one step closer to finding potential cures to illnesses and being a part of a team that wants to work hard to make changes in the future is something I want to be a part of. I may not be able to cure all illnesses, but I can be a stepping stone in the right direction. The main reason I applied to ISHTaR was for the medical experience and career conversations I would get to have with physicians, technicians, and many more.

When I graduate from high school I plan to become a certified EMT. During my interview with Julianne, she mentioned I would have the chance to shadow EMS in Carrboro, NC, during one of their 12-hour shifts. I was ecstatic to get an inside scoop on what my future career would look like. On top of shadowing EMS personnel, I would also be working with Lauren, a former EMT. They would answer any questions I may have during my time in the program about the prehospital setting. However, my career interest changed one afternoon after having a career conversion with a domestic violence worker. As a curious individual, I am always open to getting to learn more about careers in the medical field and surrounding areas. I came into ISHTaR working on projects that focus on EMS personnel and I am very appreciative of all the resources, training, time, and opportunities ISHTaR has given me to grow my skills in the medical field. I am also the designer of the new ISHTaR webpage as of August 2022!
