My name is Makayla Oldham. I am 17 years old and attend Chatham Central in Bear Creek, North Carolina. I enjoy cooking, traveling, playing guitar( and all things music), spending time outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. As a student who has always seen my future in healthcare, ISHTaR seemed like a wonderful opportunity to gain some well-rounded experience and knowledge about the field. My favorite part of the program, as well as what I was most interested in, was the hands-on learning and shadowing opportunities we have, such as volunteering in a free health clinic and riding along with EMS clinicians in Orange County. My primary interest is in nursing, and the ISHTaR program has also given me many opportunities to talk with people who have expertise working in nursing as well as other fields I find interesting. Something I look forward to is being able to continue conducting interesting research and learning more about various parts of emergency medicine. Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria for the ISHTaR, especially being interested in healthcare or specifically emergency medicine, should most definitely apply. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore many different fields of healthcare and build important skills in health training and research.
