Emily M. Hawes, PharmD, BCPS, CPP, was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Hawes began a 3-year service term on September 5, 2024, and will also be serving on NRMP’s Data Review and Research Committee (DRRC), which oversees policies related to data use and dissemination and guides their research agenda.
Hawes states, “I’m humbled to support the NRMP’s dedication to providing an unbiased, transparent, and secure platform for the matching process, and appreciate the opportunity to contribute to enhancing reporting, data stewardship, and stakeholder engagement and education.”
Dr. Hawes is a Professor at UNC Family Medicine, where she is a leader in rural and underserved practice innovation, education, and research. She directs HRSA-funded Rural Residency (RuralGME.org) and Teaching Health Center Planning and Development (THCGME.org) programs, which support the development of medical and dental residencies that train healthcare professionals nationally to serve in rural and community-based settings. These national centers, founded by Dr Page, were built on expertise gained by the UNC Family Medicine Residency’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) track, where faculty train residents through a partnership with local FQHC Piedmont Health Services (PHS) in rural settings. To date, these federal programs have contributed to the creation of 70 new rural and underserved residencies, representing more than 900 accredited resident positions at full complement, with close to 100 more programs in development across 40 states.
