Outside of work, he enjoys birdwatching with his husband in North Carolina’s many forests, drawing, and tending to his too-large collection of house plants.
Areas of Interest
Ben arrived at a career in family medicine via his earlier work in public health and health equity research, both of which have strongly influenced his clinical and research interests. As a primary care doctor, he aims to provide compassionate, affirming, whole-person primary care for all North Carolinians, with a particular focus in LGBTQ+ health and trauma-informed care. His research utilizes photovoice and other community-based participatory techniques to engage patients and community partners in critical dialogue around their healthcare experiences in order to inform practice and policy change. He is also involved in the development and evaluation of educational interventions for medical students, residents, and faculty in the care of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities.
