Resident Physician

UNIVERSITY TRACK RESIDENT

Hi!! My name is Karen Monuszko. I grew up in Florida and then got to first experience the beautiful state of North Carolina during my undergraduate years at Davidson College. After college, I spent some time out on the west coast doing psychiatry research and working at a small family run clinic before returning to North Carolina to attend medical school at Duke.

Throughout my medical school, I struggled deciding what I wanted to do because I enjoyed everything. I ultimately decided on family medicine because I can help people in any stage of life with nearly all of their health care needs. Empathetic, patient-centered care is the most important thing to me and I found this was echoed most prominently within the field of family medicine. I am passionate about mental health, sports medicine, shared-decision making, and lifelong relationships with patients.

I was drawn to this program because of the superb training in all aspects of family medicine, the variety of career paths clearly seen in our diverse faculty, and the supportive, friendly, and uplifting teaching and learning environment in this program.

I plan to practice family medicine in NC after graduation because I absolutely love this community! I enjoy spending my free time with my husband who is also a UNC resident, my parents who recently moved to the area to be close to us, and my hilarious and energetic dog. I also race competitively for an elite triathlon team based out of Cary NC, so I often spend my days off training and racing!
