FQHC Track Resident: Prospect Hill
Hello! I’m Maggie, and I don’t feel as though I have a true hometown but North Carolina has become my home since moving to the Triangle for college in 2016. I was born in China and lived there for the first seven years of my life. After immigrating to the United States, my family lived in California, Florida, Alabama, and Texas. I attended NC State (go Pack!) as a Park Scholar where I studied Nutrition Science and Spanish. After college, I was a MedServe Fellow for two years at Hope Community Clinic of East Charlotte, a free clinic serving uninsured and under insured communities with a focus on refugee and immigrant health. As a MedServe Fellow, I worked as a medical assistant and community health worker, which opened my eyes to the many gaps and inequities that exist in our healthcare system which contribute to many under-resourced patients slipping through the cracks and facing countless barriers to getting medical care.
I chose to become a family physician because I believe deeply in the role of PCPs to be a part of the safety net that supports vulnerable communities. During medical school at UNC, I took part in the FIRST program, which meant by my first year of medical school, I knew I would get to train with the UNC Family Medicine Residency. Getting to learn from the residents and faculty of our department as a medical student always provided me with great affirmation that I picked the right family with whom I will train and serve alongside for the next three (and hopefully more) years. Another draw of UNC FM was our program’s commitment to language justice when providing care to all patients. Working as a medical assistant in East Charlotte where the majority of our patients spoke Spanish and participating in CAMPOS at UNC, I was able to become proficient in medical Spanish; I am thrilled to continue honing my Spanish language skills during residency to improve access to care for Spanish-speaking patients.
My interests in medicine include women’s health, maternity care, lifestyle medicine, procedures, geriatrics… the list goes on… which is why family medicine is the perfect choice for me!
Outside of medicine, I like to travel the world with my husband, host dinner and game nights, read, take long walks on the American Tobacco Trail with friends, and be involved in our home church.
