Biographical Information
Dr. Gourlay studies bone density loss and and fracture prevention in older women and men to inform osteoporosis screening guidelines. As a family physician trained in epidemiology and clinical research, she has conducted NIH-funded observational studies of osteoporosis screening since 2007. In the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UNC, she earned an MPH degree in clinical epidemiology and developed a career goal of improving preventive health care through research on screening programs. She was the Principal Investigator of an NCRR K23 career development award and a NIAMS R03 small grant to study bone density screening and fracture risk assessment in younger postmenopausal women. She is currently conducting an NIA R01-funded study of osteoporosis screening and fracture prevention in older men. She collaborates with investigators from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures, Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study, and Women’s Health Initiative cohort studies. Her research team’s analysis of osteoporosis screening intervals for older women was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2012. She is fully committed to improving the evidence base for osteoporosis screening to prevent fractures in elderly women and men.
