UNIVERSITY TRACK RESIDENT

Hello! I’m Martin, originally from Iowa City, Iowa. I went to college at Washington University in St. Louis where I met my now-fiancée, Larissa, who had (and still has, but used to have as well) an infectious passion for medicine that inspired me to seriously consider a career in the field for myself as well. When I realized that my favorite parts of my undergraduate coursework in chemistry were healthcare-related I knew that pursuing a medical degree was the right path for me.

I returned home to Iowa for medical school, where I met amazing people doing incredible work with the community’s free psychiatric clinic and a local harm reduction organization focused on preventing morbidity and mortality among people who use drugs throughout the state. Working with these groups myself, I learned of the huge need for compassionate, proactive care for patients and populations that have been historically cast aside by medical systems. When searching for a residency program, I knew that I wanted to match somewhere with robust full-spectrum training that prioritized behavioral health and addiction medicine. Once I interviewed with UNC, I was sold on the spot. When I matched here and Larissa matched to Internal Medicine at Duke, we were absolutely thrilled, and have been loving our time in North Carolina so far.

Outside of medicine, I’m an avid player of just about every racquet sport, an admittedly embarrassed but unapologetic fan of professional wrestling, and a fatherly cat dad of two rescue kittens, Ghost and Chili, who come to us by way of a bucket on the side of I-95.
