Biographical Information
Dr. Rachel Hughes is a board-certified family medicine physician who currently practices full-spectrum family medicine in numerous settings. She attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed her residency here at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After residency, she completed a Career Development Fellowship as a Chief Resident for the Family Medicine program which only served to increase her passion for resident education and curriculum development. She also completed a fellowship in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Department in Vulvar Medicine under her mentor Dr. Deborah Phipps.
She continues to provide clinical care and train residents in the following settings: inpatient newborn, pediatric, and adult care; adult critical care; prenatal and primary care at the Orange County Health Department; and specialized gynecologic care through the MIGS clinic. She also works closely with the Family Medicine Residency Program helping residents develop Individualized Learning Plans and create robust elective experiences.
Outside of the office and hospital, Dr. Hughes is working on exploring the area’s hiking trails and state parks, spending time with her husband at any beach they can get to for the weekend, and completing jigsaw puzzles with the help of her cat Nutmeg.
