Biographical Information
Dr. Becker-Dreps is a Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Epidemiology and serves as Director of the Office of Global Health Education. Her research focuses on child health in low-resource settings. For more than 20 years, she has cared for patients as a family physician in community health center and health department settings.
Areas of Interest
Dr. Becker-Dreps’ research focuses on childhood diarrhea, vaccines, nutrition, and neurodevelopment. Her work has included collaborations in Nicaragua and Guatemala, including with the Fundación para la Salud Integral de los Guatemaltecos. She co-directed the Nicaraguan Emerging and Endemic Diseases (NEED) Fogarty D43 Training Program, which builds research capacity in Central America. As Director of the Office of Global Health Education, she supports UNC medical students, residents, and fellows in their global health training.

NIH Funds UNC Study to Investigate Maternal-Fetal Transmission of Zika
UNC researchers led by Elizabeth Stringer, MD, Sylvia Becker-Dreps, MD, and Aravinda de Silva, PhD, along with collaborators in Nicaragua, have been given a five-year, $2.7 million R01 award from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to better understand the epidemiology of Zika virus in pregnancy.
