Resident Physician

Personal Statement

Welcome to UNC Family Medicine! My name is Yoon Hie (“yoo-nee”) and I’m originally from Durham, North Carolina. My circuitous journey to medicine began at UNC, where I majored in Psychology and International Studies. After college, I worked as a business analyst in the Washington, DC area for two years and also began volunteering at a local retirement community. Soon, I found myself more passionate about spending time with and caring for the residents of the retirement community than I was about my day job. These connections helped spark an interest in a career in medicine, and more specifically, primary care.

I moved to Boston, MA and completed Tufts University’s post-baccalaureate premedical program (loved the city – not the weather!). I then returned to NC and served as an Americorps member at the Literacy Council of Wake County, attended UNC for my MPH, and worked as a research coordinator with UNC’s Cancer Center. I attended the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where I further solidified my interest in Family Medicine.

Coming into interview season, UNC was already high on my list based on my research throughout the years. By the end of interview season, I felt confident that UNC was the best fit for me as I train to become a well-rounded family physician. UNC truly has everything I am looking for: academic rigor that challenges me to be a better provider; a diverse patient population and commitment to the underserved; strong faculty with a variety of individual interests; a sincere, thoughtful support system; and of course, happy residents who are motivated, kind, intelligent, and good company to boot!

True to Family Medicine, I’m interested in it all: geriatrics, women’s health, procedures, pediatrics / adolescent medicine, OB, ethics, policy – you name it. I hope to pursue further geriatrics training upon completing residency.

Outside of medicine, I love spending time with my husband Robin, family, and friends. My interests include snowboarding, biking, yoga, live music/shows, breweries/wineries, traveling, reading, and watching movies. I also enjoy watching (almost all) sports and cheering on the Heels!
