Tamara Roman graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2009 with a bachelor of science in Molecular and Cell Biology. She then attended graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill and received her PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology in 2016. As a graduate student, Tamara worked in the lab of Dr. Karen Mohlke in the Department of Genetics. Her work focused on the identification and characterization of functional regulatory variants and molecular mechanisms at genome-wide association signals for complex traits, such as HDL cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes. Tamara’s undergraduate and graduate studies and research experiences stimulated her interest in genetic variants and hereditary diseases. Tamara joined the Berg lab as a postdoc in 2017. Her work as a molecular analyst focuses on examining the diagnostic utility of whole exome sequencing in the NC NEXUS and NCGENES2 projects.
