Zahra is a recent 2014 graduate from UNC Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Psychology, a B.A in Biology and a minor in Spanish for the Medical Professions. As a member of the Berg lab, Zahra assists in gene curation work for the NC NEXUS project, in which she looks to the published literature to ascertain clinically relevant data regarding disease causing genes and their various phenotypes. The information collected will be useful to physicians to determine which genes are clinically actionable and should be reported back to patients undergoing newborn screening. Along with that, Zahra works on the NC GENES project by conducting surveys that measure sociocultural variables that are affected with the process of and knowledge associated with genetic testing.

In her free time, Zahra likes to read, bake and go to Zumba classes. She volunteers as a Labor and Maternity tour guide for the Women’s Health Information Center (WHIC) at the UNC Women’s Hospital. Zahra left to obtain her Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling at the University of South Carolina.
