Dr. Sarah Ro serves as the Medical Director of the UNC Health Medical Group Weight Management Service Line. As a primary care physician, she recognized major gaps in obesity care and, driven by her commitment to improving patients’ health, began treating obesity as a primary focus in 2016. In 2019, she was selected as a UNC IHQI Scholar to pilot a community-based weight management program, which successfully expanded access to evidence-based obesity treatment. Her team’s efforts earned the 2023 UNC Medical Center Quality and Safety Award. By 2024, the program had grown to 17 primary care clinics across nine North Carolina counties, establishing a dedicated Service Line to meet rising demand. Dr. Ro credits UNC Health’s strong culture and infrastructure of quality improvement for the program’s success, emphasizing how this foundation enabled its development, implementation, and expansion—bringing meaningful health improvements to patients and communities statewide.
