Using process maps, also known as flow diagrams, promotes understanding of an entire process through visual illustrations. Common symbols are used for beginning and end steps, decision points, and steps in the process. Process maps can be particularly helpful in making otherwise invisible processes visible, and in fostering shared understanding of a process’ current state and ideal future state.

The following tools have been included to help you:

  1. Create a process map or flowchart of the system being improved.
  2. Analyze the map/flowchart for opportunities for improvement.
