About Dr. Chino:
Dr. Fumiko Chino is a world-renowned radiation oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, specializing in the treatment of gynecological and breast cancers. Dr. Chino has an exceptionally poignant personal and research story. Her path to medicine was influenced by her husband Andrew’s death from cancer in 2007. The experience fueled Dr. Chino’s focus on research that addresses financial toxicity in cancer care. She soon realized that these same financial concerns limit equitable cancer care across the United States in communities made vulnerable by structural racism and limited access to quality cancer screening, treatment, and survivorship care. Dr Chino’s recent research has explored the impact of Covid-19 on different populations. She was a part of a 2021 study of young adult patients during the pandemic that found the acute negative economic events associated with the pandemic may exacerbate cancer-related financial toxicity and overall hardship. In a short time, she has garnered many awards and honors, such as ASCO’s 2022 Excellence in Equity Award. She is a graduate of Duke University Medical School where she also completed radiation oncology residency. We are honored and thrilled to welcome Dr. Chino to UNC!
